“Choose destinations within the country for holidays and weddings instead of spending on foreign travel and overseas destination weddings,” said Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a fresh appeal to Indians.

Linking the appeal to India’s 7.8% economic growth in the April-June quarter, Modi in a video message on X said the country must maintain and accelerate its growth momentum. He said greater emphasis on Swadeshi, Vocal for Local and Atmanirbhar Bharat can help keep more consumer spending within the Indian economy.

For travellers, the message is straightforward: if you are planning a holiday, explore India instead of travelling abroad. From beaches and mountains to heritage cities and luxury resorts, domestic tourism can redirect spending towards Indian hotels, airlines, restaurants, transport operators and local tourism businesses.

The same logic applies to weddings. Narendra Modi urged couples and families planning destination weddings to consider Indian locations, coining the appeal ‘Wed in India.’ Spending on venues, accommodation, catering, travel and entertainment at an overseas wedding largely benefits businesses outside India. Choosing an Indian destination, on the other hand, can support local jobs and businesses, he stressed.

His comments come as part of a broader push to encourage domestic consumption and self-reliance. He argued that the more Indians prioritise Indian products, destinations and services, the greater the potential benefit to the domestic economy.

For travellers and wedding planners, the appeal also puts the spotlight on India’s growing range of domestic holiday and destination-wedding options.
